Vanadium

About Vanadium

Vanadium is a hard silver-grey, ductile and malleable metal.  It’s the 22nd most abundant element in the earth’s crust and is so valuable it is listed as a “Critical Mineral” in a number of countries.  It also holds the title as the 6th strongest metal on earth.

Vanadium global resources are estimated to exceed 64 million metric tons, with over 24 million tons of known reserves – that’s enough to meet current demand for well over 150 years. Plus, vanadium can be sustainably recovered from waste material, making it a truly eco-friendly, sustainable choice.

How is vanadium used?

This valuable metal has a great many uses across several industry sectors. Just a small amount of vanadium can increase the strength of steel making it resistant to shock, vibration and even corrosion.  When paired with titanium it forms the strongest light-weight material known to man.  The process of combining vanadium with other materials is known as micro-alloying.

Infrastructure

90% of the worlds vanadium goes into the steel industry. Vanadium micro-alloyed steel has an increased yield strength of 30 to 100% for stronger infrastructure using less material and a lower carbon footprint.

Transportation

Vanadium-alloyed steels help build lighter, stronger vehicles with improved lifespan and fuel efficiency. In shipbuilding it’s used to create high-performance vessels that are both strong and resistant to corrosion. Aerospace makes use of vanadium rich alloys for improved strength, weight reduction and fuel efficiency.

Here's where things get exciting

Vanadium also holds the key to our clean energy future. Enter vanadium flow batteries – these innovative batteries offer long duration energy storage and scalability for renewable energy like wind and solar. They capture and store massive amounts of energy when available, storing this power for when it is needed. These revolutionary vanadium batteries have the benefit of being one of the most recyclable types of battery available.
